LG develops material that’s as hard as glass but as flexible as plastic

In April of this year LG announced that it would be bowing out of the smartphone business to focus on other areas of growth. While we may not see a new LG phone anytime soon, we could still see the company involved with mobile devices.

This as LG Chem, which is a division of the South Korean manufacturer, has revealed a new display material that it calls “Real Folding Window“.

The newly designed material is said to be as hard as glass, while also featuring folding properties comparable to plastic.

It should be noted that this is not designed to be a flexible screen replacement, but rather the protective film that sits atop the display.

“Cover windows are core materials located on the outermost part of IT devices to protect the display from impact, while also delivering clear images,” LG Chem noted in a press statement.

“Unlike existing polyimide films and tempered glass-type materials, the cover window that applied LG Chem’s new coating technologies will maximize flexibility, while also providing optimized solutions for foldable phones such as making improvements to chronic issues like fold impressions on the connecting part of the screen,” a spokesperson added regarding the material’s design.

As such the likes of Samsung and Huawei, both of which have stuck to manufacturing foldables during the pandemic, could make use of the new material for future devices.

The South Korean outfit has not confirmed whether any manufacturers have samples of the Real Folding Window yet, but they are looking to partner in the industry.

“Through the Real Folding Window that we newly developed, we were able to take a step closer to resolving the pain points of customers, and we have already received proposals for joint projects from multiple clients,” Chang Do Ki, VP and Division leader for the IT Materials Division, pointed out.

“We will strengthen our partnerships with leading companies of the smartphone industry and expand our market starting with mobiles and going on to new foldable applications such as laptops and tablets,” he concluded.
