Marvel’s Midnight Suns trades chest-high cover for cards

When Marvel’s Midnight Suns was announced last week we also got a countdown to a reveal of actual gameplay, and now that’s it’s out we need to talk about cards.

Developed by Xcom experts Firaxis Games, the familiar chest-high walls and cover systems from the alien killing games is gone. Instead fights seem to take place in open areas in a turn-based system.

The attacks and abilities of characters are assigned to cards which is a love it or hate it mechanic in most games. In recent years Slay the Spire really re-invented the singleplayer card game world and opened up the market to more of them, so it will be interesting to see if Midnight Suns takes any inspirations from that indie title.

Also worth mentioning in this short trailer is the appearance of Hydra soldiers and a home base that looks a lot like the Avengers mansion but is actually a location called “The Abbey”.

Thankfully there’s more to talk about than just the gameplay reveal.

Also posted to the official Midnight Suns YouTube channel – and also as an unlisted upload for some reason – is a game overview which is more than double the length.

This reveals that Hydra is at the core of all of this using “a twist of dark magic and science” to revive the main antagonist Lilith, the mother of demons. Lilith is working to bring back her master which is the tentacled, Cthulhu-esque figure we see multiple times as an illustration in a book.

Players take the roll of The Hunter, Lilith’s daughter who is apparently the only person to ever defeat her in the past. As a new character for Marvel, players can customise The Hunter and make them into any kind of superhero they see fit.

Returning to combat and fights take place with three heroes against a greater number of enemies. Cards can be combined with parts of the environment to deal more damage, so the loss of cover doesn’t sting too much here.

When the fighting is over players can return to The Abbey to hang out with the Midnight Suns team members. There seems to be a big focus here on developing relationships with the cast which, in turn, unlocks more options for combat.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is planned for release in March 2022
