Microsoft has reportedly started kicking older PCs out of the Windows Insider Program

The confusing mess that is Windows 11 is about to get messier if reports about the Windows Insider Program are accurate.

While Windows 11 is only set to be released on 5th October, users who are part of the Windows Insider Program have been able to test out the operating system ahead of release.

Windows Insiders who managed to get around Microsoft’s hardware restrictions and install Windows 11 are now being told they will need to install Windows 10 in order to continue being a part of the Insider Program.

“Your PC does not meet the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11,” the notice reads. “Your device is not eligible to join the Windows Insider Program on Windows 11. Please install Windows 10 to participate in the Windows Insider Program in the Release Preview Channel.”

As XDA-Developers points out, it appears as if Microsoft brought Insiders with older hardware along for the ride so that it could determine what the experience was like for folks on that hardware.

This is likely how Microsoft is able to state that, “Devices that do not meet the minimum system requirements had 52 percent more kernel mode crashes. Devices that do meet the minimum system requirements had a 99.8 percent crash free experience.”

We should point out that the way Microsoft words that statement is rather slimy. The statement doesn’t reveal how often older systems have a crash-free experience rather that they crash 52 percent more than the 0.2 percent of crashes compatible systems experience which is negligible unless you’re dealing with a fleet of PCs.

While Insiders could install Windows 11 via an ISO, this will leave them in an unsupported state.

If you’re still confused about whether your PC is eligible for an upgrade to Windows 11 we recommend you start by checking your CPU against these lists for Intel and AMD.
