Musk says Tesla Roadster only expected in 2023

If you were eyeing the Tesla Roadster as your next electric vehicle (EV) you’ll have to wait awhile. This as the vehicle will only see the light of day come 2023, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed on his favourite platform of choice – Twitter earlier this week.

The Roadster joins the Cybertruck as another EV that Tesla has had to delay the release of, with the impact of the pandemic being the unsurprising culprit here. In the case of Tesla’s peculiar Blade Runner-inspired SUV, the delay is currently listed until 2022, although this latest development likely puts the Cybertuck’s release in jeopardy too.

That said, Musk is yet to officially comment on the matter, focusing only on the Roadster at this stage.

“2021 has been the year of super crazy supply chain shortages, so it wouldn’t matter if we had 17 new products, as none would ship. Assuming 2022 is not mega drama, new Roadster should ship in 2023,” wrote Musk on Twitter in reply to a question about the status of the Roadster.

Given that the Roadster was first unveiled at an event in 2017, it is turning out to be quite the wait those interested in the EV.

As for which supply chain shortages Musk is citing here, remains unclear, but if it is anything like the Tesla Semi, it could be silicon-based, with that vehicle’s release pushed back to 2023 as well at the time of writing.

Either way, it looks like the pandemic has hit Tesla hard, which once agin deflates any hopes that the manufacturer’s EVs will land in South Africa anytime soon.

To tide you over until 2023, enjoy this video of the Roadster below, which is listed to do 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds.
