Respawn has discovered “a simple exploit” that can crash Titanfall 2

Late on Wednesday a notice about Titanfall 2 started doing the rounds on the internet.

The notice warned Titanfall 2 players to not launch the game. “There are reports of a bug in the game that allow local code execution from the server,” the notice read. This “bug” was said to affect all platforms.

Is this notice real? According to a statement from Respawn there does appear to be an exploit present in Titanfall 2 but it’s not as bad as the notice makes it seem.

“We are aware of reports of a security vulnerability affecting Titanfall 2 and are investigating. We have no other information to share at the moment but will update once we do,” Respawn said in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

A few hours ago Respawn confirmed that it had discovered an exploit which could be used to crash games.

“We’re still investigating this issue but our engineers believe that we’re dealing with a simple exploit that can be used to crash games. We do not believe there are any more serious risks to affected players or their machines. We’ll update again as we learn more,” the developer added.

In a report by PC Gamer, the publication points to a Titanfall 2 player who suggested that the exploit used a temporary file which has a size cap.

“If the username of the person who invited you is larger than that size cap, it’ll start overwriting other files to save the name. Once it gets outside of that specific temporary file, though, your computer starts treating as executable code instead of a username,” the player wrote.

While this could potentially cause some headaches for players and it’s certainly not a good look for Respawn, the developer is investigating the issue and we’re sure a patch will be sent out if needed sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, we suggest waiting for more information from Respawn before launching Titanfall 2 on your PC or console.
