Segway’s Navimow robot is the sort of tech a WFH future needs

Lawnmowers, leaf blowers and weed eaters are an easy way to keep your garden looking tidy, but they are loud.

Working from home over the last year we’ve developed a disdain for gardening tools and now Segway has an outdoor answer to the robo vacuums which have grown in popularity of late.

The Segway Navimow is a robotic lawnmower that uses a virtual boundary to stay within the confines of your yard and snips your grass down to a level you like. This is accomplished with a GPS that Segway calls the Extra Fusion Locating System. This system combines a four-module GNSS positioning system with an Attitude and Heading Reference System as well as an Abnormality Alarm to prevent theft. The GPS is accurate to within 2cm.

What is interesting to note is that the Navimow only cuts between 1 – 2mm each day, but it cuts everyday. This can be adjusted via an app as can the route the mower takes and it will of course avoid obstacles.

How loud is the Navimow? According to Segway the mower has a noise emission of 54dB which is about half the noise a regular lawnmower produces.

The Navimow is available in four iterations with each offering a different recommended cutting size so you get the right one for your lawn. The largest model, the Navimow H3000E, can cover a lawn with an area of 3 000 square metres while the smallest, the H500E covers 500 square metres.

All models are IPX6 water resistant and run on a battery which is recharged via a charging station. The battery in the Navimow differs from model to model.

Unfortunately, this lawnmower is rather pricey with the smallest model starting at €1 199 which translates to around R20 306. While that is around twenty times what a regular lawnmower costs, we’re sure that this sort of tech will only get cheaper and more widespread, much like the robo vacuums on sale today.
