This weekend might be the best time to play Trials of Osiris

Destiny 2’s ultimate player versus player activity – Trials of Osiris – arrived last weekend after a brief hiatus and what a return it was.

According to data from Bungie, as many as 750 000 players entered Trials of Osiris which included 120 000 first time players and 470 000 returning players.

While there were still reports of cheating, the frequency appears to have decreased substantially since BattlEye was added to Destiny 2.

“Over 2.8M hours of Trials were played this weekend, eclipsing the highest prior single week total by a whopping 600K hours,” said Bungie in its weekly blog.

And while last weekend’s event was great, this weekend’s is looking to be much better thanks to some tuning from Bungie’s end.

First up – there will now be a Flawless matchmaking pool but it won’t be enabled right away.

“We aren’t satisfied with the matchmaking experience for players after seven wins. That area of matchmaking has a significantly higher rate of 5-0 games than we would like, so we are enabling a ‘flawless matchmaking’ pool. However, we want to make sure that there are enough flawless players to maintain good matchmaking times – so we are waiting until Friday afternoon to turn this on, and we will be watching player reactions and matchmaking analytics all weekend to make sure it is behaving properly,” the developer said.

This means that if you happen to go Flawless you are more likely to be matched with other players who have reached The Lighthouse rather than newbies dipping their toes in for the first time.

Bungie will also enable special matchmaking for players who are constantly hitting a 5-0 loss in matches. This matchmaking will be temporary and once a player starts winning it will be disabled.

For players who repeatedly back out of games, Bungie will enable quitter penalties such as those in its Competitive playlist.

“We are enabling the quitter penalties that we use on the Glory playlists – giving you a 30-minute timeout if you quit out of too many games. We are going to be watching this, and have some harsher plans if players continue to abandon their fireteams,” wrote Bungie.

Finally, next weekend Bungie will be testing Capture Zone Trials as part of its ongoing Trials Labs tests.

As a reminder, you will have to own Destiny 2: Beyond Light in order to access Trials of Osiris. This was done to make it harder for cheaters to return to the game when an account is banned. Given the popularity of Stasis and the release of Agers Scepter this week, that’s probably a good thing.

Masterwork your favourite Hand Cannon, Sniper, Shotgun, pick up your Passage from Saint-14 and get ready for what promises to be yet another fantastic weekend of Trials.
