Tipping on Twitter with Bitcoin reportedly on the way

In May of this year, Twitter rolled out a new feature called Tip Jar in an effort to help creators on the platform gain an additional source of revenue. Said tips were sent via conventional forms of currency, but now Twitter is reportedly looking to add Bitcoin to the mix.

According to 9to5Mac, app developer and researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, stumbled across the hidden feature, sharing screenshots of it on Twitter, of course.

If the screenshots are to be believed, it appears as if Twitter is partnering with Strike in order to facilitate the payment process via Bitcoin.

“Bitcoin is the world’s first widely-adopted cryptocurrency. It’s a new kind of digital money that lets people securely and directly send money to each other on the internet. The Lightning Network is a technical innovation that allows for faster payments with lower fees than Bitcoin’s primary network. We use Strike to generate Bitcoin Lightning invoices so you’ll need to connect your account to accept Bitcoin tips,” reads the information in Paluzzi’s screenshot, featured below.

While the move is unconfirmed at the time of writing, it would not be out of the realms of possibility, especially given the affinity that Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey has for cryptocurrency. He has also been quite effusive in his praise for Bitcoin, noting that it would be a game changer for the social media platform during more than one investor meeting.

Either way, given the myriad different avenues that Twitter has looked at in the past couple of years in an attempt to diversy and expand the reach of the platform, embracing crypto is only a matter of time in our opinion.

As for adding it to Tip Jar, no official date has been set, but Twitter product lead Kayvon Beykpour quote tweeted Paluzzi’s screenshot and said soon.
