Twitch officially rolls out tools to combat hate raids

Rumours about user verification coming to Twitch turned out to be correct following Twitch’s announcement on Wednesday that the feature would start rolling out to creators.

In order to give its streamers better control over their chat, Twitch is introducing phone-verified chat whereby a user will need to link a phone number to their Twitch account in order to participate in the chat. In addition, Twitch is expanding email verification settings, also to help creators improve their chat and security.

“Phone verified chat gives Creators finer control over who can participate in chat, by allowing them to require some or all users to verify a phone number before chatting. Together with updated, more granular email verification settings, Creators will now be able to use email and phone verification in tandem to meet their specific needs,” Twitch explained in an announcement.

Creators will be able to restrict users from chat based on whether they have verified phone numbers and/or emails but, the settings also allow for viewers to chat so long as they have followed you for a set amount of time determined by you.

Subscribers, VIPs and Moderators can be exempted from needing email or phone number verification.

Twitch also says that it will allow users to verify up to five accounts per phone number but, to avoid abuse, if an account linked to that phone number is suspended, all accounts linked to that number will be suspended.

“Unlike 2FA, which requires verification each time you sign in, you’ll only need to verify a mobile phone number and/or email once to be considered ‘verified,’ and this verification will carry across all channels on Twitch. This is to reduce friction for viewers, and to help ensure that Creators can still grow their channels and interact with new viewers, without being adversely impacted simply because they want to protect themselves and their communities,” Twitch explained.

Importantly, if a user doesn’t verify their phone number they will still be able to view the stream, they just won’t be able to participate in chat.

Twitch recognises that this solution is not perfect but admittedly no solution will stop bots and nefarious individuals 100 percent of the time. The point here is that this user verification creates friction for those who want to abuse the platform.
