Amazon working on live audio app that integrates with other services it owns

2021 is the year that Clubhouse came to the fore and every other big tech firm tried to emulate it, with varying degrees of success at this point. Now Amazon is getting into the live audio app game, with a report suggesting that a platform codenamed Project Mic is in the works.

This according to Axios, which broke the story earlier this week noting that Amazon is investing heavily into a live audio application to rival Clubhouse, as well as Twitter Spaces and Spotify’s Greenroom.

While the reports are yet to confirmed by an official statement or spokesperson, the move makes sense given other big tech firms are working on similar Clubhouse clones.

That said, the Amazon version would look to leverage the other audio-related platforms that are owned by the tech giant.

“Sources familiar with the company’s thinking say that Amazon isn’t looking to build an audio social network like Clubhouse or Twitter Spaces, but rather a digital radio-like tool for live-streaming performances and conversations,” writes Axios.

“While that will likely include podcasts and talk radio programs, the company is focused mostly on music and events for now,” it adds.

In terms of how Project Mic could be integrated into the other businesses that Amazon owns, live audio sessions would be launched on services like Twitch for example, potentially allowing musicians to share their music, although there might be some DCMA hurdles to negotiate.

On top of this, live audio could be funnelled through devices running its Alexa digital assistant or the Amazon Music and Audible apps.

Much like Facebook, which recently launched a Clubhouse rival of its own, Amazon would likely use its other platforms to amplify the reach of its live audio app, which is something its other counterparts may not be able to.

For now it remains to be seen when the company will be ready to release Project Mic to the masses, but it is clearly a plan it is actively working on.
