Applications still open for a bursary through the Meat Industry Trust

As 2021 comes to a close many students are looking towards 2022 and how to fund their studies and one bursary is still taking applications right now through the Meat Industry Trust.

For those who have not heard of this organisation before its about page provides some information.

“The MIT is a discretionary Trust and is entitled to fund various objectives of interest to the Red Meat Industry, such as the granting of bursaries for the purpose of furthering education relating to and the benefit of the Red Meat Industry in general and also the the promotion of livestock welfare,” the MIT site reads.

Its bursary scheme is taking applications that close next week on 5th November.

The bursary is intended for post-graduate students and provide R60 000 per year which means R120 000 for two years of a Master’s Degree and R180 000 for three years of a Doctorate Degree.

Due to the nature of the MIT only certain fields of study fall under its purview and students applying will need to make sure that their degree(s) falls in line when applying. Academic merit as well as field of study are the two most important factors in the MIT bursary applications according to its description.

The MIT does provide this short list of fields in the red meat industry to give an idea of what it is looking for. The fields with an asterisk are considered “of prime importance”.

  • Sustainable Natural Resources*
  • Livestock Production*
  • Animal Health and Welfare
  • Animal Products
  • Economics of Red Meat*
  • Predation Management
  • Livestock Theft Prevention

This bursary has been open for some time but was brought to our attention through the University of South Africa (Unisa) which put out a general call for applications earlier today on Twitter. Unfortunately that tweet contains a broken link so see the pages below from the MIT for more information:
