COVID-19 in South Africa: 18th October 2021

We start another week under adjusted alert level 1 lockdown and with it continued concern over the spread of COVID-19 in South Africa.

According to the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH), the newly recorded statistics remains relatively low, with 414 cases over the past 24 hours. This sees the total number of cases related to COVID-19 in South Africa rise to 2 916 593.

The number of fatalities also remains relatively low, with 25 over the past 24 hours as the death toll increases to 88 612.

The department adds that the recovery rate is now 96.2 percent as 2 805 186 recoveries reported and over 18.17 million tests conducted so far.

Looking at the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 17 558 jabs administered. That figure may be low owing to it being a Sunday, but the past week has seen turnout at vaccine sites across the country on the rise.

As of 17:00 on 16th October, a total of 20 200 231 vaccines have been administered, with an estimated 10 759 755 people fully vaccinated at this stage.
