COVID-19 in South Africa: 1st October 2021

Last night President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation regarding COVID-19 in South Africa.

The address focused on four different topics, but two in particular are of importance in our view, with the president announcing new initiatives on the weekend to drive vaccinations and moving the country to adjusted alert level 1 lockdown.

The former announcement makes sense given the slowing turnout at vaccination sites this past week, along with the first group of people who went for vaccinations when those aged 18 and over were made eligible, now due for their second dose.

As such, we’re hoping that turnout in the coming days and weekends will be greater as the country pushes to vaccinate its population.

As for adjusted level 1 lockdown, it brings with it some logistical changes, such as increasing the limit for people attending events by threefold and widening the hours at which alcohol can be imbibed.

Looking at the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) as we begin a new month, the past 24 hours has seen 1 678 cases recorded as the total number of infections to date rises to 2 902 672.

Added to this is 101 fatalities being reported, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa increases to 87 626.

Shifting back to the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 146 190 jabs administered,. As of 17:00 on 30th September, a total of 17 505 358 vaccines have been administered across the country.
