FNB virtual cards now work in all FNB Pay digital wallets

We get the impression that FNB is as sick of plastic cards as we are as the bank further expands the functionality of its Virtual Cards.

Announced in 2020 and officially launched earlier this year, Virtual Cards have been great for online shopping. Throughout the year, however, FNB has been pushing to make its virtual cards more functional in the real world.

Today FNB announced that Virtual Cards in all FNB Pay enabled digital wallets. This includes FNB’s own Tap to Pay and Scan to Pay as well as Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay, Garmin Pay and Apple Pay.

“Our approach is to support our individual and business customers with a wider choice of contextual payments solutions via our digital platform. As a result, we’re immensely delighted to see the growing usage of our safer and convenient payment methods for online and point-of-sale payments. In recent months, Virtual Cards have become some of the preferred payment instruments by customers, and this augurs well for the future of payments,” chief executive for FNB Card, Chris Labuschagne, said in a statement.

By expanding the functionality of Virtual Cards, not having your FNB card on you isn’t an issue anymore, so long as the establishment you’re trying to pay at supports contactless payments.

FNB Virtual Cards are stored in your FNB Banking and you can assign different cards to different things. With this news today, we’re setting up a card specifically for contactless payments, just in case we forget our wallet at home one day.

“FNB remains committed to providing a range of unique and innovative solutions that are centred around customer needs. Our Virtual Card forms an important part of our journey in making the customer’s payment experience as convenient, safe and secure as possible,” concludes Labuschagne.

FNB said earlier this year that customers had spent over R1 billion using virtual cards since January 2021.
