Google and UNESCO partnering on digital journalism training in Africa

Google has announced the launch of its Global Initiative for Excellence in Journalism Education to enhance the quality of digital journalism training in Africa.

The company made the announcement during its annual News Initiative (GNI) event, which is being held virtually this week. The digital journalism training will be rolled out over the next 18 months and is being implemented in partnership with UNESCO.

The aim for the partnership is to update journalism education programmes in over 100 institutions in Africa.

“The pandemic has changed the way people interact with news and accelerated that shift to digital. There has never been a time when access to good quality journalism has been more important. This programme will seek to establish, define, and implement the local definitions of excellence in journalism. We will work with 100 different journalism schools targeting to benefit over 4,000 journalists,” explains Matt Brittin, president for EMEA Business and Operations at Google.

“At UNESCO, we have very different countries as members, with different approaches to journalism — but the one thing that at least they all agree on is that journalists should be well-trained,” adds Guy Berger, director of Strategies and Policies, Communication and Information at UNESCO.

More information regarding this latest initiative from Google will be revealed in the coming weeks, with the aforementioned rollout already outlined to take place over a year and a half.

In the interim, Google is encouraging journalists from the across the continent, as well as those interested in pursuing careers in digital journalism to join one of this week’s virtual sessions.

“The week-long virtual event will provide an opportunity for journalists, publishers, and content creators in Africa to find out more about Google’s training programmes for journalists and news business professionals,” the company noted in a press release sent to Hypertext.
