Luno now boasts a customer base of 9 million across 40 countries

Luno has grown from strength to strength since opening its doors in 2013 and it recently hit a monumental landmark.

The cryptocurrency firm now boasts nine million customers across 40 countries. In the last four months, Luno’s customer base grew by an additional one million, 30 percent of which are based in South Africa.

South Africa is one of Luno’s strongest markets according to the firm.

“As we hit the 9 million customer mark, it is a fitting symbol that Luno’s logo now adorns an iconic building in Cape Town’s unofficial financial district on the foreshore. Staff numbers have swelled to over 600 across the UK, South Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nigeria, Australia and Singapore, and we are actively hiring over 60 specialists,” says Marius Reitz, general manager for Luno in Africa.

Luno also shared some interesting stats regarding the latest million customers to join its platform.

The firm says that the average deposit made by the new users is R550 and their purchases were split as follows:

  • Bitcoin – 67 percent.
  • Ripple – 43 percent.
  • Ethereum – 20 percent.

“Of the new customers, 37 percent are aged between 18 and 24, and gender splits align with trends in financial services – almost three quarters (71 percent) are male,” says Reitz.

What makes this all a little more impressive is that it took Luno five years to build a base of one million customers. That mark was reached in 2017 and since then growth has ballooned.

“Luno’s growth has accelerated significantly since then. In the last year alone, we have added over 3.6 million new customers,” Reitz concluded.
