Qualcomm filters down 5G support with three new Snapdragon chipsets

Qualcomm has revealed four new Snapdragon processors, three of which will support 5G.

These are not flagship level silicon, but will instead feature in the mid-range space across a spectrum of price points as the company continues to build out its portfolio of 5G compatible processors.

The 5G relevant options are the Snapdragon 778G Plus 5G, 695 5G and 480 Plus 5G, with a new 680 being the 4G flavour.

“Mid-range smartphones are expected to be the main driver for accelerating 5G device adoption – especially in emerging regions,” notes Deepu John, senior director for product management at Qualcomm regarding the silicon.

“These four new additions to our roadmap create significant opportunity for our OEM customers and provides additional options to continue to meet the growing demand for our 5G and 4G mobile platforms,” he adds.

Qualcomm explains that much of the technology that features in the new 7, 6 and 4 series processors can originally be found in the 8 series options that the company made available to OEMs in recent months.

To that end, the 778G Plus 5G boasts improved CPU and GPU performance, with specific applications in terms of mobile gaming.

“Our latest and greatest 6th Gen Qualcomm AI Engine enhances your favorite activities, including contextual awareness for optimized audio and background noise suppression in video calls,” adds the firm.

As for the 695 5G, it delivers up to 30 percent faster graphics rendering, which is designed with content capturing in mind.

“The Qualcomm Kryo 660 CPU, Qualcomm Adreno 619 GPU, and 6nm process are all improved from the predecessor. These robust performance upgrades aid every on-device interaction, including smooth gaming, reliable streaming, pro-level photography, plus real-time uploads and downloads,” the company outlines.

Lastly, the 480 Plus boosts clock speed from 2.0GHz to 2.2GHz and will replace the previous Snapdragon 480 in Qualcomm’s portfolio.

A number of OEMs will be making use of these newly minted processors, with the likes of HMD Global, Honor, Motorola, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi all set to get their hands on these offerings to implement in hardware we should see come the beginning of 2022.

As such, we should see a number of devices revealed at MWC next year feature the 5G supporting Qualcomm hardware listed above.
