The Pixel 6 & 6 Pro are the latest Made By Google devices unavailable in SA

Made By Google events are often bittersweet to cover as excitement over the new devices showcased is often tempered by the fact that they are generally not available to purchase in South Africa in any official capacity. The same rings true with the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.

These new devices were unveiled by Google last night, with both available to purchase in the US come 28th October starting at $599 (~R8 698) for the standard model and $899 (~R13 053) for the Pro version.

Being a Pixel device Google talked up the personalised experience that would be delivered via the pure version of Android it is running, but our attention is more drawn to the Tensor mobile system on chip that devices sport.

“Collaboration across Google Research, hardware and software allowed us to bring new capabilities to Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. This is a result of Google Tensor running more advanced, state-of-the-art ML models but at lower power consumption compared to previous Pixel phones,” explains the blog post for Tensor.

“For example, Google Assistant on Google Tensor uses the most accurate Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) ever released by Google. And for the first time we can use a high quality ASR model even for long-running applications such as Recorder or tools such as Live Caption without quickly draining the battery,” it adds.

As such, the system will look to constantly enhance and refine the mobile experience, which, if true, could prove interesting. That said we have heard similar claims from other manufacturers, such as Huawei’s Mobile AI, which failed to live up to the blockbuster billing.

In terms of other notable elements, Google has highlighted the new 50MP primary camera on the rear which is paired with 12MP ultra-wide angle option and makes use of some clever Google software exclusives such as a Magic Eraser that allows you to edit out elements from a photo. We can certainly see this feature come in handy after a break up.

It’s also worth pointing out another handy piece of software in the form of Live Translate that will allow you to message contacts in other languages – namely English, French, German, Italian and Japanese.

If you live in a country where Google has an online retail presence, these two new devices look quite capable, we only wish South Africa was one of those. Hopefully that changes soon.
