Trials Freelance is the best thing to happen to Destiny 2 PvP for PvE players

Desperado is a weapon perk in Destiny 2 that turns a relatively slow firing Pulse Rifles into what is best described as a machine gun.

The perk, ramps up a weapon’s rate of fire so that you can quickly dispatch enemies. The problem is that this perk and weapon combo is currently only available on one weapon – The Messenger – and earning that weapon requires that you play Trials of Osiris.

Before Season of the Lost, Trials of Osiris was the battleground of the best of the best in Destiny 2’s PvP space. This is because in order to earn rewards you had to win matches and preferably seven matches back to back (known as going Flawless), in order to earn rewards.

Since introducing matchmaking to Trials of Osiris however, the mode has become rather popular. In the week before Season of the Lost, 134 251 players entered Trials of Osiris, when the mode returned it brought in 748 490 players according to data from Trials Report.

This weekend has seen an increase in the player count entering the mode compared to last weekend and I’m marking that down to Freelance mode.

In this mode, solo players can search for a match against other solo players and, the numbers so far speak for themselves – Freelance is great.

I entered Trials of Osiris early on Saturday morning only to find myself matching with the same five players over the course of six matches. I dipped out to do some other things and returned on Sunday afternoon.

While I matched one or two players more than once, I chalk that down to South Africa’s small gaming population and the fact that it was Sunday. Despite this I had some of the most intense and fun games of PvP in Destiny 2 I can remember. Some games were easy with my team cracking out five round wins to win the match easily, but many more times it went down to the wire.

Relaxing in Trials

What really helped me enjoy my time in Trials of Osiris Freelance was the calm I felt while playing. As nobody (and I mean nobody) was entering the in-game chat, the whole mode became a casual affair with each player trying their best to defeat the other team.

This also levels the playing field somewhat as everybody in Freelance is alone and simply trying to finish up bounties or earn their weapon of choice for the weekend. Yes there will be folks trying to go Flawless and some mad players will manage to reach the Lighthouse. For the vast majority though, simply being able to grind for some of the best weapons and armour in the game is enough.

In Destiny 2’s pinnacle PvP mode, this was a welcome change especially for players who don’t enjoy the action that Trials of Osiris brings with it. This means that earning The Messenger with that Desperado perk isn’t only viable, it’s enjoyable as well.

Wait times are reasonable and even on Sunday it didn’t ever take longer than six minutes to find a match. This may not hold true forever, but there is clearly interest in the mode, even if it is taking place on one of the worse maps in Cauldron.

Beyond that, being able to focus Trials engrams means that even if you only happen to grind out one or two levels at Saint-14, you can at the very least earn some rewards and hope to earn that weapon you’ve been looking for. At worst, you’ll get some high-stat armour for your efforts and that isn’t bad when Pinnacle rewards are few and far between.

This is not to say you can enter the mode and sit around staring at your Ghost for five rounds but even if you lose, you earn a slice of reputation that goes toward earning rewards from the Trials of Osiris reward track.

Make no mistake, there is still a reason to try and go Flawless as Adept weapons and mods are still locked behind Flawless. Being able to round out your weapon collection or unlock armour to turn into ornaments without having to feel like you’re dragging a pre-made team of two down.

For average players and players who aren’t keen to run the anxiety inducing rollercoaster that is PvP in Destiny 2 however, Freelance is a good addition to the most intimidating mode in the game.

Whether Freelance will remain a fixture remains to be seen but the amount of players that entered the mode this weekend looks good.

Of course, the main concern is that by splitting the mode into a Freelance and Team based options, both will ultimately suffer. I don’t think this will be an issue but that depends largely on how Bungie invests in Trials of Osiris as a whole.

The community now awaits feedback from Bungie but for our mental health and anxiety, I hope Freelance becomes a permanent feature.

Trials of Osiris is available until 19:00 on Tuesday and if you are able to play a few matches, I highly recommend you do. It just might change your opinion of PvP in Destiny 2 altogether.
