Watch the first trailer for the animated Blade Runner: Black Lotus series

Interested in anything Blade Runner related? Good, so are we, which is why the first trailer for Blade Runner: Black Lotus has us excited for what this animated series potentially has to offer in deepening the lore of the films.

The series, which was announced at NYCC 2021 (yes, there are still conventions on the go), is being created by as a Crunchyroll original, along with airing on Adult Swim.

Local availability is yet to be determined, but the first episode in the series is slated for release on 13th November. With the Crunchyroll anime streaming platform available in SA, that will likely be your first port of call, but it remains to be seen whether Showmax could get access to, as has been the case with other Adult Swim series such as Primal.

The series follows two main characters – Niander Wallace Sr and a replicant named Elle. The former should be familiar to those who watched Blade Runner 2049, as Niander Wallace Jr was overacted by Jared Leto in the live-action film.

As such, the events of Black Lotus happen prior to that of 2049, with neo-DTLA and its neon lit streets being the backdrop. The character of Elle is voiced by Jessica Henwick, who we will soon be seeing in Matrix Resurrections in December.

In terms of talent behind this project, anime fans will be pleased to know that Shinji Aramaki from Appleseed and Kenji Kamiyama from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex will be sharing direction duties on this 13 episode series.

Seemingly coming out of nowhere, Blade Runner: Black Lotus is a welcome surprise. If you enjoy the trailer pasted below, you may want to circle 13th November in the calendar.
