A Little Golf Journey (PC) Review – A Hole lot of Golf

From developer Okidokico and publisher Playtonic Friends, A Little Golf Journey is the kind of game that you can easily find yourself zoning out in.

The chilled vibes and vibrant aesthetic will enthral you and before you know it, you’ll be spending tonnes of time in this game because it has such an addictive nature to it.

Players in A Little Golf Journey will be brought up to speed with some extremely simple golfing mechanics in no time. The first few levels of the game will teach you the basics and then the game really kicks it into high gear with some incredibly challenging courses.

Simple golfing

Gameplay in A Little Golf Journey involves simply aiming your shot and hitting the golf ball across a course. It gets a bit more complex with a power shot mechanic being available which will swerve your aim wildly.

Your targeting circle will move left and right unless you “breathe” in and focus when using the power shot mechanic so you will need to get your timing right for trickier shots.

There’s a mini-story attached to A Little Golf Journey which is told by reading through cards left for you by your mentor. These are filled with quirky little tidbits of text and some of them are pretty feel good to read as you progress throughout the game. Players will move from hole to hole on a map that’s devoid of colour.

As you complete holes, you’ll return colour to the map and unlock further paths to travel down. A minor gripe with the game is the fact that once you’ve seen a story card, you can’t see it again. Hopefully this is patched into the game at some point.

A Little Golf Journey also incorporates a “Secret hole” aspect into numerous levels and you’ll be able to find hidden paths on the map this way. Finding a secret hole on a course is not as simple as it may seem as some of them are hidden away quite well.

There’s also even more replayability added to each course thanks to hidden collectibles or “Blue things” as the game calls them. Trying to get all of these adds more longevity to an already pretty lengthy game and it’s great.

The graphical aesthetic of A Little Golf Journey is where it truly shines. This combined with the simple, yet fun gameplay means that there’s a distinctly relaxing vibe to the game.

Players can simply load up the game, play through a couple of holes and chill out to some plain and straightforward meditative golfing. It’s amazing and Okidokico have nailed this.

Assist Mode

With that said though, if you’re a completionist or you absolutely must obtain the maximum number of score stars available on each hole, this game will probably frustrate you somewhat. Some levels will need you to pull off some incredibly complex shots to get the ball into the hole in the minimum number of shots.

This is quite challenging, but if you want to just enjoy the game, we’d suggest ignoring the stars on some levels. The game awards plenty of stars to unlock new holes on the map so you don’t really need to focus on obtaining the highest rating on every single hole.

Thankfully, Okidokico have also included an “Assist mode” for gamers out there that might get frustrated or that want an even easier gaming adventure.

The “Assist mode” has numerous options which make the game even easier such as unlimited focus and fully displaying the golf ball pathing.

This is great news for younger gamers too so that they too can enjoy the wonders of golfing here.

The soundtrack of A Little Golf Journey features music that fits the game’s aesthetic to a T(ee) with piano-centric music that will help you zone out and really get into the golfing. It works remarkably well and ties together the visuals and gameplay perfectly.

Final Verdict

Overall, A Little Golf Journey is one of 2021’s most relaxing, chilled vibes, enjoyable games yet.

Each hole looks amazing and the journey you take throughout the over 100 different courses in the game’s world will keep you coming back for more. This is a sleeper hit and we highly recommend picking up A Little Golf Journey.

It’s pure, non-toxic gaming at its finest.
