COVID-19 in South Africa: 25th November 2021

According to the latest figures released by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), Gauteng accounts for the vast majority of cases recorded over the past 24 hours for COVID-19 in South Africa.

As many as 1 018 new cases to be more precise, with 1 275 in total recorded for the country over the past 24 hours.

The NICD says the positivity rate has since climbed to 3.6 percent, which means we are now on the cusp of a fourth wave of infections and if the current numbers are anything to go by, Gauteng will be the hardest hit province.

It remains to be seen if this wave will be worse than the previous one, but South Africans will need to prepare for a tough festive season.

As we await to see how events pan out, the total number of infections to date now sits at 2 950 035, according to the National Department of Health (NDoH).

The department also notes that 22 fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has reached 89 657. The recovery rate, however, remains at 96.3 percent, but this number is likely to decrease in the coming days should infections continue to climb.

As for the vaccine rollout, which is crucial art this stage, the past 24 hours has seen 129 660 jabs administered. As of 17:00 on 24th November, a total of 25 002 232 vaccines have been administered, with an estimated 14 115 744 people fully vaccinated at the moment.
