Cyberpunk 2077 has surprise surge in sales on Steam

Despite coming up on its first birthday and its terrible reputation, Cyberpunk 2077 has managed to move a decent amount of copies recently and worm its way into the top selling list on Steam.

This is according to the unofficial third party tracking site Steam Database (SteamDB) which provides a recap of the top ten selling list on the platform for the last week, ordered by revenue.

While Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t come in first it did claim bronze being beaten out by the latest instalments of Farming Simulator and Battlefield, the latter of which is still raking in the dough despite a landslide of poor reviews.

  1. Farming Simulator 22
  2. Battlefield 2042
  3. Cyberpunk 2077
  4. Red Dead Redemption 2
  5. Valve Index VR Kit
  6. Forza Horizon 5
  7. Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition
  8. Red Dead Redemption 2
  9. FIFA 22
  10. Myth of Empires.

So what has caused this sudden uptick in sales of CD Projekt Red’s game? The first aspect to consider is price as the game is currently discounted 50 percent as part of the latest Steam sale.

The next aspect is a wave of positive reviews that are speculated to come from new players picking up the game for the first time not knowing about its problems and troubled launch.

Finally it could be the fact that, coming up on a year since its 10th December launch, those who were interested in the game are now deciding to give it a spin hoping that its problems have been ironed out by now.

As we reported on in our launch review, Cyberpunk 2077 is a deeply flawed game in its core design that no amount of patching can fix, though a year of patches is rather welcome given its poor performance.

It could be a combination of all these factors, but let’s park Cyberpunk 2077 and look at the rest of the list.

As SteamDB points out Farming Simulator 22 has more concurrent players than Battlefield 2042. While this may sound impressive it’s worth noting that many other games are currently beating the new Battlefield. According to the official Game and Player Statistics from Valve itself, Battlefield 2042 just scrapes into the top 20 most played games.

Older and established games like Grand Theft Auto V, Warframe, CS:GO, Team Fortress 2 and many others come out on top. Even relatively new games such as New World and Naraka: Bladepoint have it beat.

As for the rest of the top ten list it’s to be expected. Red Dead Redemption 2 appears here twice because of the way Steam lists separate versions of games as multiple entries, and the rest of the games are usual suspects on top selling lists.

Myth of Empires is the sole outlier as an Early Access game and an indie title. It launched into Early Access on 18th November.

“Myth of Empires is a multiplayer sandbox game. Featuring a high degree of freedom, players will fight to survive and earn their place in a world torn by war. Build fortresses, lead armies in massive battles, siege enemy cities, and establish your own empire!” reads the game description.
