DHET rolls out first izwi-CET Newsletter

The Department of Higher Education and Training has released the first issue of the izwi-CET Newsletter which is focused on Community Education and Training (CET) Colleges.

The first volume is an eight page PDF which can be read for free here.

This newsletter contains a message from Thembisa Futshane, Deputy Director-General: CET (pictured above on the cover of the publication) as well as a section written by Doctor Blade Nzimande, Minister of the Department of Higher Education and Training, Science and Innovation.

The pair are joined by several educators from around the country to inform readers of what has been going on at their schools.

“We shine a spotlight on some of the work at the Northern Cape CET College, with an opportunity to meet an inspirational 50-year old student. We’ll share more information in upcoming editions, but I can say for now that work is underway behind-the-scenes on a CET Summit hosted by the Minister to strategise how to position CET for effective skills provision in line with the needs of people who come to us for service,” Futshane writes.

Our favourite article in the newsletter is the aforementioned one about the student in her fifties. The student, Sylvia Mayekiso, is visually impaired and enrolled in several courses at the Northern Cape Community Education and Training College.

The newsletter includes a picture of Mayekiso using what seems to be a braille typewriter, a piece of technology we’ve never seen, let alone used, before.

Even better was the fact that a portion of the newsletter was replicated in braille so that Mayekiso and other students can enjoy it too.

“I invite you to consider this newsletter as a snapshot of happenings in the sector, delivered to you every second month. This is also a platform for the entire CET sector, including stakeholders to share CET-relevant articles. I look forward to your articles, suggestions, CET upcoming events and feedback, so please email us at cetnews[at]dhet[dot]gov[dot]za,” Futshane concludes.

The first izwi-CET Newsletter concludes with a list of Community Education and Training Colleges across the country with contact details for each, giving prospective students a resource to use no matter which province they may be in.
