More details emerge for Apple’s rumoured mixed reality headset

It is that time of the week when we discuss rumoured Apple products, but instead of the usual iPhone details, it is a mixed reality headset that is the focus right now.

The Cupertino-based firm has not revealed anything official at this stage, with noted industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo chatting to MacRumors about the headset.

Kuo’s track record when it comes to early reports on upcoming Apple hardware is fairly solid, so the details being outlined could indeed be the genuine article.

To that end, Kuo says the mixed reality headset will be a standalone device, which contradicts a report from The Information (paywall) earlier in the year that the offering would need to pair with an Apple mobile device in order to operate.

In remains to be seen who’s sources are more spot, but both appear to agree on pricing and availability, with a figure of $3 000 being bandied about and a late-2022 release on the cards.

As for other details on the mixed reality headset, Kuo notes that it will feature a pair of Sony-made 4K micro LED displays internally, allowing it to deliver both virtual and augmented reality experiences for wearers.

Looking at the silicon, something akin to last year’s M1 chipset could power the headset, although it’s unclear if an entirely new system on chip will be present here. If it does feature something comparable to the M1, it would have a powerful processor onboard, which could open up capabilities for developers down the line.

With renewed interest in these kinds of headsets given everyone’s desire to create a metaverse, whether Apple has similar designs, remains to be seen.

Either way, as has often happened in the past, expect Apple’s venture into mixed reality headsets to be emulated by competitors with new devices too.
