MTN customers still travelling abroad now have 99c per MB data roaming

MTN has announced pricing changes for its international data roaming. The cost per MB has dropped significantly, and while the announcement comes at a time when South Africans can travel abroad to many destinations, the reduction should still be appreciated.

Where the price for data roaming was once R2.50 per MB, it is now 99 cents per MB for all MTN customers and effective immediately.

“For customers who spend a lot of time on their phones whist travelling, international roaming service is essential. The process of having to buy a new SIM card for each new country and to communicate a new phone number to friends, family, and colleagues can become tedious, especially for frequent travelers,” explained Mapula Bodibe, chief consumer officer at MTN South Africa.

“With the complex pricing structures attached to international roaming services, customers find it difficult to estimate the amount of data one will use when travelling. We therefore have reduced our roaming data rate to make business and leisure travel more pleasurable, and affordable, for our customers,” Bodibe added regarding the motivation for the change.

She was also aware of the difficult situation that many South Africans find themselves in right now, with the omicron variant of the virus, barring entry into several countries that our local travellers frequent during the festive season.

“Despite current limitations on some travel outside of South Africa, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we want those still able to travel to benefit from this saving, with immediate effect,” Bodibe concludes.

International data roaming is available in 72 countries and gives access to 154 partner networks across the globe.

Customers can check if roaming service is activated on USSD *135#. MTN also advises that usage can only be monitored when having an active Hello World Data Bundle, along with TopUp customers needing to recharge to use the roaming services.
