Spotify is testing a Discover queue that looks a lot like TikTok

The popularity of TikTok has lead to many attempts to emulate that success whether it’s YouTube with Shorts or the failed Quibi which launched and shuttered over the course of 2020.

Now it appears as if Spotify is trying to emulate TikTok by highlighting Canvas once again. As a quick refresher, Canvas is a feature musicians can use to replace static album art with short, looping video clips. Spotify claims that these short clips lead to more streams and shares.

A new feature which Spotify confirmed to TechCrunch that it is testing is called Discover and it combines the endless scrolling that TikTok has popularised over the last few years with Canvas.

Discover will – if it makes it out of testing – become a fourth menu item on the mobile navigation tab. Here, listeners can scroll through short clips of songs that they can tap to like or view more information on the track.

The new feature was spotted by Chris Messina using Spotify’s TestFlight build for iOS.

Spotify doesn’t seem to be willing to confirm that this specific test is taking place and for good reason. While this is a nifty feature, it may never make it out of testing or it could take years to optimise it for widespread release as a worst case scenario.

“At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience,” a Spotify spokesperson told TechCrunch. “Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We don’t have any further news to share at this time”.

We like this idea especially as it makes discovering new music a bit more engaging than it currently is.

Last week, Spotify rolled out the ability to view lyrics while you listen to music, a feature made possible thanks to a partnership with Musixmatch.
