UJ & Wits partner for ‘impact of spectrum on higher education and society’

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) are co-hosting an event around spectrum, the range of frequencies used for wireless communications.

The event’s main topic is “the impact of spectrum on higher education and society”.

“This webinar will provide a holistic explanation of the spectrum, outline the current context, and identify the possible impact for the higher education sector and broader society to identify the strategic levers deemed essential for our country’s development,” an announcement reads.

In South Africa the topic of spectrum has been a contested one with businesses and governmental bodies butting heads over allocations and laws. These problems have caused massive delays in implementing communication infrastructure in the country which we’re sure will be covered at this event.

These problems have come into better focus during the pandemic as both education and employment moved online. We’ve seen countless problems appear because of this shift, with institutions such as the University of South Africa (Unisa) struggling to keep its students writing online exams. While this specific problem was worsened by the recent loadshedding, internet connectivity is still a massive hurdle.

While this is a partnership by UJ and Wits, the event is open to everyone with a public Zoom link provided in the details below.

Joining representatives from the two universities are decision makers from the government, Vodacom and Telkom. It will be interesting to hear from the telecom company reps which have been hard at work trying to acquire spectrum.

  • When: 29th November | 14:00 – 15:00.
  • Where: Zoom | Meeting link here.
  • Who:
    • Opening address: Professor Tshilidzi, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UJ.
    • Keynote address: Khumbuidzo Ntshavheni, Minister of Digital Communications and Technology.
    • Panel discussion: Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, Vice-Chancellor of Wits | Brite Devassy, Telkom’s Head of Technology & Strategy | Doctor Andrew Barendse, Vodacom’s Managing Executive for Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs.
