Clubhouse adds Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba language support for Nigerian creators

In early November, Clubhouse announced the addition of support for 13 new languages on the platform and while it was welcome news, particularly for those in India, there were unfortunately no African languages included in the list of 13.

After we reported on this, Clubhouse reached out to us to confirm that support for Nigerian languages were on the way.

That day has now come, with Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba now supported on the social audio platform, which will no doubt be something creators in the region will be pleased to hear.

“Language localisation means that the app experience, such as prompts, notifications, descriptions, topics, and more, will be in Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba when the languages are selected. For example, When someone joins the app, the onboarding language will now be in their local language. If someone wants to start a room, they will see ‘+Room’ prompt and selections all in their local language,” the platform explained in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“This means that people who join clubs like Yoruba Palava, IGBO, Naija House, etc, will not only have discussions about culture and history in their local languages but experience Clubhouse in them too,” it adds.

Along with support for these three Nigerian languages, Clubhouse has added French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Malayalam, Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish, Tamil and Telugu in recent months.

Overall, the app has support for 26 languages on Android and more are said to be on the way. Hopefully that includes a few from South Africa in the near future.
