The number of cases for COVID-19 in South Africa has risen sharply again, This as the National Department of Health’s (NDoH) latest report confirms that 8 561 cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours.
As has been the case since the start of the surge, Gauteng has been the most affected province in the country, accounting for the vast majority of new infections and recording 6 168 recently, according to the NICD.
Consequently, the total number of infections recorded to date now sits at 2 976 613. The NDoH also notes that 28 fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours too, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa rises to 89 871.
Other key figures sees the recovery rate drop to 95.8 percent, while more than 19.52 million tests have been conducted to date.
As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 165 775 jabs administered. Whether the growing number of infections for the omicron variant of the virus will prompt more to get vaccinated, remains to be seen.
As of 17:00 on 1st December, a total of 25 728 259 vaccines have been administered throughout the country, with an estimated 14 561 395 people fully vaccinated at this stage.
