The latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) regarding COVID-19 in South Africa shows cases on the rise again. The previous day saw numbers under the 7K mark, which was put down to it being the beginning of the week, but now the figures have risen sharply.
To that end, the NDoH confirms that 13 143 cases have been recorded over the past 243 hours, as the total number of infections recorded to date climbs to 3 051 222.
Of the newly recorded cases, Gauteng once again accounts for the majority, with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) noting that 8 445 have been reported in the province.
The next closest is KwaZulu-Natal, which has registered 1 396, so Gauteng leads all others by quite some margin and will likely be the epicentre when the fourth wave is officially announced by government.
The department also notes that 27 fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa now sits at 90 002. The recovery rate has fallen too, with it currently 93.9 percent.
As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 140 281 jabs administered across the country. As of 17:00 on 7th December, a total of 26 639 293 vaccines have been administered, with an estimated 15 104 933 people fully vaccinated at this stage.
