COVID-19 in South Africa: 9th December 2021

The number of cases for COVID-19 in South Africa has risen sharply again over the past 24 hours, with the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirming that 19 842 infections have been reported.

Once again it is Gauteng which is leading all other provinces with new cases, and by quite some margin, with 11 703 recorded, according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).

It is followed by some distance by KwaZulu-Natal with 1 989 and the Western Cape with 1 899, leaving Gauteng as the epicentre for this current wave of infections.

Following these latest figures, the total number of infections recorded for the country to date now sit at 3 071 064. The NDoH also confirmed 36 fatalities over the past 24 hours, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa rises to 90 038.

Other key statistics sees the recovery rate at 93.4 percent, with 2 867 966 recoveries reported so far.

With the National Coronavirus Command Council set to meet this week and an address from President Cyril Ramaphosa potentially on the cards, it remains to be seen what will happen with the country’s lockdown status and the ability to travel between provinces, which is significant consideration during the festive period.

As for the vaccine rollout, 133 695 jabs have been administered over the past 24 hours, while a total of 26 781 642 vaccines have been administered throughout SA as of 17:00 on 8th December.
