Formula E teases Gen 3 EV that we may see race in Cape Town in 2023

Our hopes of seeing electric race cars navigating the City Bowl were recently dashed, as Cape Town looks to postpone its involvement in Formula E until the 2023 season.

It is a real pity too, with the governing body this week revealing teaser images and some details for the Gen 3 electric racing cars for the 2022-2023 (Season 9) calendar.

Teams competing in the 2022-2023 season will be able to begin testing their vehicles in the Spring of next year, competition organisers explained.

As for what the Gen 3 brings to the table, it is billed as being the world’s most efficient race car. To that end, it is lighter and smaller than the Gen 2 model, along with utilising 40 percent less energy while racing, according to the FIA. This is thanks to a new regenerative braking system, which will make the Gen 3 the first Formula car with hydraulic brakes.

The addition of a multiple powertrains is a first too, with a rear and front system that yields 350kW and 250kW respectively, reaching a top speed of 321km/h.

“The new Gen3 Formula E single-seater is a car created at the intersection of high performance, efficiency and sustainability. The work accomplished by the FIA’s teams together with Formula E, since the launch of the discipline eight seasons ago, tirelessly seek to drive innovation and further the development of sustainable mobility. I have no doubt that this new single-seater will elevate Formula E to the next level,” enthused Jean Todt, FIA President, regarding the new model.

“The Gen3 is our fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient racing car yet. It is a creature designed for its habitat: racing on city streets in wheel-to-wheel combat. We look forward to witnessing it inspire and excite the next generation of motorsport fans in cities around the world from Season 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship,” added Jamie Reigle, Formula E CEO.

As for when we will see the Gen 3 in full, along with the respective teams’ liveries, neither the FIA nor Formula E, have divulged details.

Hopefully though, when they are track ready, a race in Cape Town is on the cards.
