Porsche Taycan breaks Guinness World Record for charging efficiency

When it comes to electric vehicles (EVs), one of the most important elements is what kind of driving range can be mustered from the onboard batteries. In that category, Porsche achieved a rather impressive feat with its Taycan – a new Guinness World Record.

In the year of our lord 2022, we don’t necessarily put as much weight on such a Record as we may have done a couple of decades ago, but this one will be of particular interest for those in countries where EV charging infrastructure is lacking, such as South Africa.

To that end the aforementioned Porsche Taycan set a recorded previously held by the Kia EV6, which is earning rave reviews of late, for the shortest total charging time needed to travel from one coast of the United States to the other.

The journey, which totalled 2 834.5 miles or 4 561 kilometres for those in the Southern hemisphere, only required 2 hours, 26 minutes and 48 seconds of total charging time to complete.

It smashes the previously mentioned record by some distance, with the Kia EV6 managing the feat in 7 hours, 10 minutes and 1 second.

“Comparing charging performance from of variety of EVs I have driven to date, the Taycan sets the bar,” noted Wayne Gerdes, a multi-Guinness World Records title holder for efficiency and range in other vehicles.

“The first time I charged on a 350KW charger, 6 to 82 percent occurred in just 22 minutes,” he added.

Porsche explains that the 2021 Taycan model used for the record setting attempt was a standard vehicle, although a few added extras were present, such as a Performance Battery Plus, as well as the Premium Package, Adaptive Cruise Control and Porsche Electric Sport Sound to make the journey more comfortable.

“I’m proud and honestly a little surprised to have set the new benchmark by such a margin. The Taycan performed even better than expected. Its performance, comfort and road holding were excellent, but the standout metric alongside the charging capacity was its efficiency,” highlighted Gerdes.

Given how much Porsche has beaten the previous record, it will be interesting to see when another EV will get close to breaking it. For now, the German carmaker sits above all others in terms of the efficiency of its battery technology.
