Students warned of ‘companies falsely advertising Unisa services’

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has once again had to issue a warning to students and other school stakeholders about companies claiming to offer services related to the institution.

“It has come to our attention that some companies and social media pages have been falsely advertising Unisa online information and various services to assist Unisa students. In the process, companies either solicit money fraudulently from students or make money through online advertising with no benefit to students. These companies are in no way associated or related to Unisa,” an announcement reads.

It seems that these kinds of scams are ramping up recently as the academic year starts again in 2022. Just last week another scam was going around encouraging students to contact non-Unisa staff for admissions.

“We request that students only use official Unisa sites and platforms as any other platforms will provide you with incorrect information and / or act illegally which will be harmful to your studies,” the announcement continues.

The recommended official channels are the Unisa website, the myUnisa student portal, student emails and the official social media platforms:

Something we’d like to see from the school is the verification of the above social media accounts. We see a lot of discussion from students happening on Twitter, for example, but the official @unisa account lacks the familiar blue tick for verified accounts.

That being said we do understand the struggles of trying to get an account that lauded blue tick. We’ve tried in the past to verify our own social media accounts so we know what an uphill battle it will be, but for the largest university on the continent this really should be a priority.

Hopefully Twitter and the other big social media platforms can push through applications from the school, assuming it has even sent them through in the first place.
