Canon introduces first APS-C EOS R mirrorless cameras with EOS R7 and EOS R10

Canon and its EOS R range of mirrorless cameras continues to grow in terms of length and breadth. The latest offerings from the Japanese camera maker come in the form of two new “hybrid” mirrorless options with the EOS R7 and EOS R10.

These mirrorless cameras carry the unique distinction of being Canon’s first APS-C EOS R systems, which is said to bring the benefits of both the mirrorless form factor and popular APS-C image sensor together into one offering.

“The APS-C format offers significant benefits for photography enthusiasts and content creators, including the potential to make smaller yet high-speed and high-performance cameras positioned perfectly for enthusiasts,” explains Canon is a press release about the new devices.

“Taking the essence of the EOS 7D series, the EOS R7 is suited to wildlife and sports photographers that need the added reach of APS-C, as well as the outstanding speed and tracking autofocus inspired by higher models in the range,” it adds.

In terms of the key specifications, the EOS R7 sports a 32.5 megapixel sensor while the EOS R10 has a 24.2 option. This makes the latter the more generalist all-rounder of the two for photographers looking to enhance their hobby, while the former leans more to the professional territory.

Sticking with the R7 it can muster 15fps with a continuous mechanical shutter and 30fps with an electronic shutter. Added to this is a Dual Pixel CMOS AF II and in terms of video it can shoot 4K 60p and oversampled 4K 30p video.

Other key features include up to 8-stops In-Body Image Stabilisation (IBIS), 1.15x magnification viewfinder to assist with playback. The final noteworthy element that will be of interest to pros is dual UHS-II card slots, facilitating support for instant backup, separate image and movie storage or recording different formats to each card.

Local retailers are not selling the Canon EOS R7 or R10 just yet, but we have seen the R7 available for pre-order on the likes of Outdoor Photo for R26 995 (body only). The EOS R10 is found on the same site for pre-order at R24 995 including a RF-S 18-150mm F/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens. No word on when actual sales go up at the time of writing.
