Corsair’s first notebook is an ode to AMD

Having played in the desktop space for many years, even acquiring Origin to build custom gaming PCs, Corsair is dipping its toes in the gaming notebook market.

This morning Corsair revealed its first gaming and streaming notebook in the Voyager a1600 AMD Advantage Edition. As the name suggests, this notebook is something of an ode to AMD with both a CPU and GPU from the chipmaker.

On CPU duties the Voyager a1600 features either an AMD Ryzen 7 6800HS or an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS running at 4.4GHz and 4.8GHz respectively. This is paired with up to 32GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR5 memory, because obviously Corsair would use its own RAM brand.

On GPU duties, the only card on offer is the Radeon RX 6800M which drives a 16 inch 16:10 display with a 2560 x 1600 resolution and 240Hz refresh rate.

Putting the spec sheet aside for a second the Voyager a1600 features a set of ten customisable software keys. What makes these keys different from those in a MacBook (before Apple ditched the touch bar a generation later) is that the keys are powered by Elgato Stream Deck software. This could prove useful for a streamer who doesn’t have any sort of Elgato hardware, but we’re stopping short of calling this a must have feature for streamers.

These S-keys – as Corsair has dubbed them – are also exposed when the notebook lid is closed which is an odd design choice. Hopefully the panel housing the keys isn’t prone to scratching.

The webcam is able to capture at a 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second but Corsair didn’t really let on much more as regards the full capabilities.

Based on the spec sheet, this looks like a decent notebook for the money, but it remains to be seen whether the Corsair name is big enough to get folks to choose that over the likes of MSI, ASUS and Gigabyte. With that having been said, Corsair is hardly a new entrant in the PC space so we’re confident it knows what its customers want.

As for pricing, the Voyager starts at $2 699.99 (~R42 000) with the most expensive configuration at $2 999.99 (~R47 000). As for availability, Corsair says it will announce it at a later date.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the wires for news of whether the Voyager a1600 is coming to South Africa.
