The number of newly recorded cases for COVID-19 in South Africa continues to see-saw.
This as the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 5 096 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours, doubling the figure seen the previous day and a little more than what we saw at the beginning of the week.
As such, trending numbers regarding this recent rise in cases across the country is proving a little more difficult to monitor, which is why we are yet to hear from the department on whether this increase can indeed be considered a fifth wave.
For now, numbers are rising, which means additional caution is required when venturing outside of the confines of your home, especially if you are not fully vaccinated or have not received your booster shots.
Looking at the rest of the numbers in the latest report, the total number of infections to date now sits at 3 899 841. The NDoH adds that 41 fatalities have been reported too, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has reached 100 812. The department also notes that the recovery rate remains at 95.4 percent.
As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 56 769 jabs have been administered, with 22 176 of these being booster shots. As of 17:00 on 17th May 2022, a total of 3 5 556 934 vaccines have been administered across SA.
