A Disney Africa spokesperson has told Hypertext that console apps will arrive within a month.
“Disney+ will be available on gaming consoles approximately one month after launch. The team is prioritising delivering a seamless viewing experience across as many devices as possible and are working quickly to expand our device footprint,” the spokesperson said.
For now viewing is limited to browsers, Android and Apple smartphones and smart TVs.

Many South Africans are waking up and signing up for Disney+ but if you have a console you’re likely going to have to jump through some hoops for a bit.
This morning we were informed by a reader that they were unable to download the Disney+ app for their PlayStation and, upon checking, there is in fact no Disney+ app on the PlayStation Store.
The same goes for Xbox and Microsoft with a search for “Disney+” and “Disney Plus” yielding no results.
Now, we suspect that the reason for this is rather simply the fact that the service has just launched. It’s more than likely taking some time to enable the Disney+ app on various storefronts and hence we have the situation we do now.
The good news is that if you a smart TV you will be able to download the Disney+ app. Supported smart TVs include:
- Amazon Fire TV
- Android TV
- Apple TV
- Chromecast
- LG TV
- Samsung
All major browsers are supported as are both Android and Apple iOS. Unfortunately there is no sign of support for the Huawei AppGallery and we wouldn’t hold our breath waiting for that one.
The fact that Disney+ isn’t available on consoles however, seems like a misstep to us especially when Disney’s biggest competition is on both consoles.
We have asked Disney’s local representation when it expects to launch apps for consoles and we will update this story should we hear back from the firm.
