Eskom botches loadshedding Stage 2 announcement again

What is happening at Eskom? The utility has been issuing power alerts for many years now alongside declarations of loadshedding, but this week it seems to have stopped this practice.

These power alerts are incredibly valuable as they give South Africans a better understanding of the state of the power grid. This is a problem for several reasons.

The first, and most important is that Eskom’s website is rarely updated. This afternoon, at the time of writing, the website is still displaying notices for 16th May.

While Eskom does have a data portal, the data that is available is often a day or two days old despite stating it was refreshed on the day you’re viewing that information.

It’s a poor showing from Eskom which didn’t even give loadshedding for Wednesday it’s own statement, choosing instead to respond to a tweet to announce the power cuts.

Things are worse if you’re not on Twitter because Eskom didn’t even announce loadshedding on its Facebook page on Wednesday.

As if power cuts weren’t bad enough, it seems Eskom has taken the approach that South Africans don’t need more information and it’s fine to just declare loadshedding without providing an explanation.

Our frustrations with the power utility aside, loadshedding stage 2 will be in effect from 17:00 until 22:00 on Thursday night.

At this stage, we insist that you download EskomSePush as that application which has no relation to Eskom is more reliable than the entity itself.

At least we’re still getting some sort of warning, though that’s not saying much.
