Grade 1 & 8 online applications: Gauteng parents urged to get documents

Gauteng parents and other caregivers are advised to begin collecting important documents to complete online applications for students going into grade one or grade eight next year.

This follows the announcement made earlier this week that online applications would be open again from 22nd July.

“When applying, parents and guardians must have certified copies of the following documents and either upload them to the system OR submit them physically only to the schools chosen when applying within 7 days of applying,” the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) writes.

Those documents are:

  • “Parent/Guardian ID OR Passport
  • Child ID OR South African Birth Certificate OR Passport
  • Refugee Permit OR Asylum Seeker Permit OR Permanent Residence Permit OR Study Permit
  • Proof of Home Address
  • Proof of Work Address (Optional, for those applying at a school closer to work)
  • Latest School Report and Clinic Card/Immunisation Report (Grade 1 only).”

The GDE also adds that documents must either all be uploaded online as digital copies or submitted in person has physical documents. There can be no mixing of the two ways to submit these.

Unfortunately, regardless of how documents are handed over for the application process, they need to be certified.

Despite the ongoing pandemic all document certification in South Africa needs to be done in person, a public service that is usually carried out by the South African Police Service (SAPS) at police stations.

The SAPS does, however, provide this list of alternative certification bodies if parents can’t make it to a police station:

  • Lawyers or notary public (who are members of a recognised professional body)
  • Actuaries or accountants (who are members of a recognised professional body)
  • Members of the judiciary
  • Directors, managers or company secretaries of a bank or regulated financial services business

More information about the grade one and grade eight online application process can be found on the official website here.

On 22nd July the applications are planned to open at exactly 08:00.
