Huawei announces Watch GT3 Pro and Watch Fit 2 as latest wearables

Lacking its usual fanfare, Huawei Mobile hosted an event in its native China to unveil some new devices.

The most notable is likely the new foldable – the Mate Xs 2 – but considering its local release is yet to be determined our more immediate attention is focused on two new wearables – the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro and Watch Fit 2.

The devices are refreshed offerings of wearables that Huawei has previously made available in SA, but the crucial difference this time around will be the addition of HarmonyOS as the native operating system.

We have reviewed HarmonyOS specific devices recently, most notably the Watch 3, so it will be interesting to see how the experience has improved in a short space of time.

Back to the hardware and the Watch GT 3 Pro features a 46mm titanium body, with three different strap options – rubber, leather and titanium. There is also a 42mm ceramic option, which is billed as being more fashion focused than sport.

In terms of the biometrics that the Watch GT 3 Pro will be able to track, it will be pretty much on par with that of the Watch 3. The key difference here, however, is the ability for Electrocardiogram (ECH), but this feature will require regulatory approval in different regions before it is activated by Huawei.

As for the Watch Fit 2, it too is a lot like its predecessor, which we noted as being a great value for money smart band for those who were looking for a solid solution.

That said there are some differences, such as a larger 1.74″ AMOLED display, with Huawei using the extra screen real estate for interacting with app notifications such as those from a paired phone running WhatsApp.

It also has enough storage for up to 500 songs, which will run via Huawei’s own music app, along with a new optical heart sensor on the rear. As such, of the two new devices, this one seems to be packing a bit more in terms of new elements.

At the time of writing, no official confirmation of when the Watch GT 3 Pro or Watch Fit 2 will be available in SA, or indeed how much the wearables will cost, but we expect Huawei Mobile South Africa to share those details in due course.
