Paramount+ details global rollout for rest of 2022, but no MEA on the cards

Later this month Disney+ will be launching in South Africa, ending a long drought of access to original Marvel and Star Wars-related content on the streaming platform. While its arrival is welcome, there are still other platforms yet to made available in SA, such as Paramount+.

It may be one of the lesser known players on the streaming scene, but Paramount+ appears to be gaining solid momentum. This according to an earnings call this week, which sees its subscriber count near the 40 million mark.

As such it serves as enough critical mass to begin a global rollout, the earnings call confirmed. On this front, Paramount+ is set to launch in the UK and Ireland on 22nd June, according to a report from Variety.

The publication also notes that South Korean will receive access to the platform in June too, but no date has been outlined at the time of writing. Joining the Southeast Asian country later in the year will be Italy, Germany, France and Austria.

India too has been earmarked, with a release on the sub-continent set for sometime in 2023.

Sadly, and all too often the case, there is no mention of South Africa for the rollout. We are not alone in being left out either, with no other country in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region warranting a mention either.

Why this is the case is unclear, but just like HBO Max and a handful of other smaller streaming platforms, access in SA remains unavailable for now.

Whether the impending release of Disney+ and its uptake in the coming months can serve as a signal for other platforms to roll out in South Africa, is also an uncertainty at this stage.

Either way, the region is hankering for access to streaming content.
