With Disney+ finally launched in South Africa local Marvel fans can finally watch the most recent MCU show in the form of Moon Knight and enjoy all its interesting visuals.

One of the most interesting is the various mirror and reflection scenes in which the two personalities of Moon Knight – Steven Grant and Marc Spector – talk to each other, despite the fact that both characters are played by Oscar Isaac.

In the video below released by the official Marvel Entertainment YouTube channel we’re shown how some of this is accomplished with information provided by Sean Faden, Visual Effects supervisor on the show.

The effect is pulled off with a combination of pre-planning the shots, digitally painting out unwanted reflections, CGI recreations and more.

Also interesting here is that some of the supernatural lighting of the scenes was done practically where we would have thought it was all digital.

We also get to see a brief shot of Mike Hernandez, Isaac’s real life brother who sometimes was a stand-in for one of Moon Knight’s personalities. We’ve seen Hernandez in a few of these behind the scenes videos but what this latest one shows is that sometimes Isaac would still go solo in certain scenes.

One actor playing two versions of himself is nothing new, of course, but it’s good to see how it’s done in the modern day on a big project like this.

We’d be remiss not to mention the Corridor Crew YouTube channel and their “VFX Artists React” series where they break down good and bad CGI in media.

Their latest episode of the series coincidentally also has some sections focused on Moon Knight.

This episode, which you can watch below, also features commentary from Joe Farrell, a Visual Effects supervisor at Marvel Studios who has worked on several MCU projects.

While Farrell didn’t work on Moon Knight he does provide his perspective on how the various mirror and reflection shots were done, which are fun to compare to the just released official video above.
