The ad-supported tier of Disney+ will reportedly be family friendly

It is Disney+ launch day here in South Africa and while the streaming service is not cross-platform yet, many people likely purchased the 12-month discounted offer announced a few weeks ago.

With an ad-supported tier for Disney+ set to arrive later this year, details on how advertisements will be showcased to subscribers have emerged via a report from Variety.

Perhaps most importantly, the publication says ads on Disney+ will be family friendly, which means you should not see content that involves politics or alcohol.

“According to two media buyers with knowledge of recent discussions between the company and advertising agencies, wary of overwhelming the streaming outlet with a glut of ads that might obscure the service’s family-friendly environment,” writes Variety.

While it remains to be seen whether that is indeed the case, if Disney+ does keep to this approach, it would be rather refreshing given many online content platforms play quite fast and loose when it comes to the type of advertising allowed.

Along with noting what types of ads will not be permitted at launch, sources close to the matter added that Disney would remove ads when content is being viewed on a kid’s profile.

It has also been mentioned that Disney+ will an average of four minutes of ads per hour of content on the ad-supported tier, which as Variety points out, is quite a bit less than the other streaming services available in the US.

As for pricing, however, no information on that front has been shared, but the ad-supported tier will of course be less than the $7.99 a month Stateside. What that will translate to in South Africa, as the ad-free monthly subscription costs R119 currently, remains to be seen.

Either way, it looks like Disney+ is making all the right moves so far.
