TikTok adds tools to easily credit creators and it wants you to use them

Trends on TikTok can come from anywhere as a girl bumping into her bed learned earlier this year.

Sometimes however, the original creator of a trend doesn’t receive the credit they deserve and TikTok wants to change that. As such, the platform has announced the launch of new tools that push uploaders to credit others where necessary.

“With the launch of these crediting tools, creators will have the ability to directly tag, mention, and credit a video in their description, showcasing the diverse voices on the platform and the strength of our community. Whether taking part in the latest trend, adding a punchline to a joke, or creating the next viral sound, creators can easily and directly cite their inspiration,” director of the creator community at TikTok US, Kudzi Chikumbu, writes in a blog post.

“We’re also adding more user prompts to credit throughout the posting process along with an educational pop-up that encourages and explains the importance of crediting. These new features will be rolling out to more people over the next few weeks,” the director added.

The tool gently nudges uploaders to give credit to a video where it’s due. This includes crediting a video directly in the description of a piece of content. This is great as it will allow users to more easily find the original inspiration.

The platform has also created a guide that showcases the best practice for crediting creators and attribution along with video examples.

What we want to know is whether creators, especially bigger creators, will actually use these features. Last year black creators took part in a strike in which they stopped participating in dance challenges on TikTok. The reason for this was because those creators believed that they didn’t receive the credit they deserved when coming up with trendy dance challenges.

While these tools from TikTok are good to have whether they will have the intended benefits remains to be seen.
