TikTok mirrors Twitch with new tools for live streamers

Live streaming on TikTok is about to get a bit of a boost with some new features and creators who meet the livestreaming requirements could stand to earn a bit more money.

The headline feature here is a LIVE Subscription which users can purchase every month to show their appreciation to their favourite creators. These appear to function similarly to Twitch subscriptions or YouTube memberships. What isn’t clear is how this subscription will be split between TikTok and creators or indeed if TikTok will take a cut at all.

“LIVE Subscription is an extension of our efforts to build diversified creator monetization opportunities that suit a range of creator needs. LIVE Subscription gives creators the opportunity to increase their earnings while continuing to grow their community and also provides engaged communities an opportunity to thank their favorite creators on a regular basis,” TikTok explained in a press release.

The LIVE Subscription offering will be available to creators on an invite-only basis at launch but TikTok says it will become globally available “over the coming months”.

Much like Twitch, a subscription will get a viewer a few perks which include:

  • Subscriber badges: Displayed next to a user’s name in their profile. The badge upgrades over time.
  • Custom emotes: Custom emotes that subscribers will get access to that can be used during a stream.
  • Subscriber-only chat: Creators have the option to turn this on or off so they can interact exclusively with subscribers.

Unlike Twitch and other livestreaming platforms however, in order to go live on TikTok, you must have a minimum of 1 000 followers and be at least 18 years old.

We don’t think TikTok is trying to tussle with the likes of Twitch, at least not right now. Rather, these tools look like an extension of an an announcement earlier this month which could see making money on the platform more viable.

All of TikTok’s community guidelines are in force during live streams and subscribers to a streamer must be over 18 years old.

LIVE Subscriptions go live for invited creators on 26th May.
