You can transform R3K into this LEGO Optimus Prime

Earlier this month LEGO made quite the announcement by revealing that it is working with rival toy company Hasbro to turn Optimus Prime into an official, buildable toy.

While just about all the details have been revealed regarding this set in the proceeding weeks, South Africans were left wondering how much it would cost with no local RRP provided.

Thankfully, today, we finally have this information by way of a listing on the official LEGO store in SA. Local LEGO and Transformers fans will need to pay R2 999 to get their copy of the set.

We can look at some international pricing to get a better idea of how fair this price is. In America Optimus Prime will run you $169.99 (~R2 687), but take note that this doesn’t include taxes. Those in Europe are paying €169.99 (~R2 876) and in the UK it is priced at £149.99 (~R2 984).

The Euro and UK prices include taxes and are usually the basis for what we pay in South Africa, and we can see that we will be paying slightly more but that is to be expected when you consider extra fees like import taxes, specially on something this large.

With 1 508 pieces and standing 25 centimetres tall when built, this definitely falls into the large side of things.

Aside from being a great display model this set’s big feature is the ability to transform between vehicle and robot mode without requiring any disassembly at all, just some twists and turns like a regular Transformers toy.

Your three grand also buys you some accessories including an Energon Axe, jetpack, Ion Blaster, the Matrix of Leadership and a small plaque.

You can see more of the LEGO Optimus Prime in this fun little trailer released by the company recently. This will have to do until the release of the set on 1st June.
