Brave is beta testing Goggles, a way to re-rank search results

When you run a search online, generally you’ll find advertising or irrelevant results from brands gaming the SEO system. Despite you influencing the content that is seen, you don’t control it and Brave wants to change that.

The makers of the Chromium-based browser have announced a new feature called Goggles which lets users customise their search results when using Brave’s search engine.

“Goggles will enable anyone, or any community of people, to create sets of rules and filters to constrain the searchable space and / or alter the ordering of search results. Anyone could then choose to apply a Goggle—or extend it—to their view of Brave Search results. Essentially, Goggles will act as a re-ranking option on top of the Brave Search index,” Brave explained in a blog post.

In examples, Brave shows that you could push tech blogs to the top of results when search for tech advice. More than that you can even customise results to show more politically left or right leaning sources. We’d advise against that as it can create an echo chamber but the option is there. The best feature however is the option to remove Pinterest posts from search results. That alone makes this an option worth exploring.

As mentioned, Goggles are only available within Brave’s own search engine. More so, many of the Goggles currently available are meant to be for educational use to showcase how the feature works. Developers can extend and fork these and it appears as if Brave envisions a sort of marketplace where users can find Goggles that match their needs.

This a cool feature but we do wonder how many users will actually take time to create Goggles and actively use them.
