COVID-19 in South Africa: 17th June 2022

Yesterday was Youth Day, offering a slight reprieve from the concerns regarding COVID-19 in South Africa, as well as the ever-looming threat of loadshedding as a cold front hits parts of the country.

As such, we have been snapped back to reality ahead of this weekend. While the threat of loadshedding still persists, the numbers related to the spread of the virus remain relatively low.

This as the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 1 936 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours. The result sees the total number of infections recorded to date climb to 3 983 675.

The department adds that eight fatalities have been recorded over the past 24 hours too, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa now sits at 101 584.

As for other key figures in the report, the NDoH says the recovery rate has increased slightly to 97.1 percent, while more than 25.56 million tests have been conducted to date.

Looking at the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 6 079 jabs administered owing to it being a public holiday. As of 17:00 on 16th June 2022, a total of 36 565 633 vaccines have been administered across the country.
